Shaping the Future of Public Transit for San Antonio Residents

September 17, 2025

As part of its Cool Neighborhood Pilot Program, the City of San Antonio Office of Sustainability tasked WestEast with exploring strategies to relieve urban heat island effect and improve ridership comfort at VÍA transit stops.

After researching academic studies, emerging technologies, candidate sites, and technical design precedents, WestEast conducted a Programming Workshop engaging stakeholders from San Antonio Public Works, VÍA, and UTSA to identify appropriate criteria for a Concept Design study.

WestEast evaluated the proposed program, sustainable features, and common site constraints to devise an adaptable solution incorporating passive cooling technologies and vegetative transit corridors.  We developed alternative Concept Designs serving zero-lot-line, typical, and flagship transit stops and prepared cost estimates both for pilot sites and for a broader program roll-out.

The Office of Sustainability plans to construct pilot Cool Transit Stops in 2026.
