The Project

WestEast Design Group was selected to create an iconic structure to complement the future Chapel for America’s Airmen at JBSA-Lackland. The design aimed to honor the journey of Basic Military Training cadets through a structure that evokes lift, unity, and purpose. At the heart of the concept is a spiraling steel spine clad with lightweight aluminum wings, supported by a single chrome column symbolizing mentorship—the 'Wingman.' The surrounding site features reflective pools, shaded seating, a gathering amphitheater, and bermed paths that guide visitors through a meditative and ceremonial landscape.

The Methodology

The project began with an in-depth charrette involving Air Force leadership and stakeholders. WestEast developed three design concepts, refining them through iterative feedback sessions. Technical components included advanced structural framing systems, wind and solar path analysis, and sustainable grading strategies to minimize ramps and maximize accessibility. Cost estimates were developed using RS Means and e4Clicks, and a full 3Dfly-through model was created. Special attention was given to avoiding climbable surfaces and integrating lighting for both visibility and ambiance.

The Result

The selected concept was formally adopted by JBSA forintegration into the MILCON chapel project. The design was praised for itssymbolism, innovation, and its ability to enhance the spiritual and ceremonialenvironment. Although construction is pending the larger chapel development,portions of the landscape concept have already informed site planning. Theproject reflects WestEast’s commitment to visionary design grounded inengineering precision and cultural meaning.
