The Project

Faced with the need to modernize and relocate keyrehabilitation services, University Health System set out to transform theReeves Rehabilitation Center into a more welcoming, patient-centered space. Thegoal was clear: improve the quality of care and comfort for patients receivingphysical, occupational, and speech therapy. WestEast Design Group was broughtin to lead the architectural and interior design for this important transition. The new 13,800-square-foot clinic would be housed on the second floor of thePavilion Building, replacing outdated spaces on the third floor of the MainHospital. The program called for large therapy areas, a variety of specializedtreatment rooms, and support spaces that would enhance both patient experienceand clinical operations.

The Methodology

Designing across two structurally different buildings came with its challenges—especially the need to physically link them by removing a masonry wall. WestEast approached the task with careful coordination and deep engagement with user groups from the very beginning. Through a series of collaborative work sessions, the team translated clinical needs into spatial strategies, ensuring the layout would support flow, accessibility, and care delivery. Thoughtful planning allowed the team to address adjacencies, integrated a warm and calming material palette, and introduce more natural light through added windows and roof transoms. Practical features like a soiled utility room, audiology booths, staff offices, and a public toilet expansion were balanced with design touches that created a sense of calm and dignity for patients. While AutoCAD was used for documentation due to scale and budget, the team incorporated sustainable design principles throughout.

The Result

What emerged was more than just a relocated clinic—it was a thoughtfully designed environment that prioritizes healing, ease, and functionality. The reimagined Reeves Rehabilitation Center now offers a seamless experience for patients and providers alike, with wide, open therapy areas and clear, efficient circulation paths. From a concierge-style reception area to private treatment rooms and a specialized ADL kitchen and bath, every detail was considered with patient dignity in mind. Despite the technical complexity of the project, the design team delivered a space that feels effortless—warm, accessible, and attuned to the physical and emotional needs of those it serves.
