The Project

As part of the City of San Antonio’s 2017 Bond Program, WestEast Design Group was tasked with programming, designing, and administering improvements to the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex. The project involved working closely with Public Works, Parks & Recreation, and community stakeholders to identify opportunities for enhancing the facility. A new Event Hall and Fieldhouse were planned to provide amenities for athletics, events, and administrative functions to support the complex's ongoing operations.

The Methodology

WestEast’s design process involved careful consideration of the existing sports complex infrastructure and its relationship to public, event, and athlete approaches. The design aimed to create a monumental identity for the facility while integrating it seamlessly with the current infrastructure. Close engagement with stakeholders, including Public Works and Parks & Recreation, allowed WestEast to adapt to shifting goals and market conditions, ensuring that the design met the needs of the community and supported the facility’s growth.

The Result

The new Event Hall and Fieldhouse at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex will enhance the venue’s capacity for athletics programs, events, and administrative functions, helping generate revenue for ongoing stadium operations. Despite logistical challenges, WestEast has worked closely with Public Works and the General Contractor to ensure construction stays on track, with the facility targeting completion and occupancy by Summer 2022.
